Irish National Hot Air Ballooning Championships

September 20th - 26th 2009 (tbc)
There is a feast of colour planned for the skies over Waterford starting Sunday 20th of September. The Irish national Hot Air Ballooning Championships is the longest running National Hot Air Ballooning Championships in the World. It is an invitation only event and by its very exclusivity has become a calendar item for ballooning enthusiasts across Europe. For infromation on the 2008 event click here.

International Festival of Light Opera, Waterford

International Festival of Light Opera, Waterford

This annual event remains very popular since its initiation way back in 1959. There are 14 nights of Light Opera and modern musicals that are different every night. It brings some of the foremost Music Societies in the British Isles and Ireland to the Theatre Royal in Waterford City. This venue has recently been extended, so you can expect to see larger audiences than ever before.

Guinness Féile na nDéise is a traditional Irish music and culture festival held every May Bank Holiday weekend in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford. It features the best that Waterford has to offer in terms of top quality traditional musicians and dancers as well as a diverse range of street entertainment and exhibitions. Since the foundation of the festival in 1995 performers and musical groups from all over Ireland and Europe have performed there.

The Waterford Fringe Festival is usually concurrent with the Festival of Light Opera. It aims to compliment the opera festival by presenting displays of other art forms to provide a variety of choices so people can pick their preferred entertainment. The wide selection of visual arts includes a multitude of drama, music, comedy and of other family-friendly events.

sprOg Festival, Waterford

This is a festival for all the little sprogs, kids under the age of 8, so that the children can be the centre of attention before the Spraoi festival. There will be loads of entertainment specifically targeted for the over 5s and under 8s but you can be sure they will have something for everyone else as well. There are 2 shows a day, including workshops and exhibitions so you can pick and choose your favourite.

This festival is an annual riot of colour, energy and excitement with an atmosphere that is unique among Irish festivals. The new parade route will circle the Peoples Park via Water St., the Waterside, Catherine St., The Mall, Lombard St. and Park Road. The parade is conceived, designed and constructed in-house under the direction of Spraoi's Artistic Directors. Its a fabulous spectacle. Special effects, lighting, live music with original soundtracks, puppetry, sumptous costumes and elaborate floats all come together to create a unique experience. Attracting over 50,000 people along the route on a vast scale, a vivid, vibrant and unforgettable experience for performer and spectator alike.

The August Festival promises to be the highlight of the summer season in Waterford when over Four days of sponsored races, fashion, and serious socialising make it a time when many Waterford emigrants make their annual pilgrimage home to enjoy the festival atmosphere that is around the town as over 25,000 are expected to attend the festival.

Bluegrass Festival, Dunmore East Co. Waterford

Ireland's biggest free Bluegrass Festival takes place throughout the village of Dunmore East with groups from the US and the UK as well as plenty of Irish performers. The bands will be playing over 50 gigs in 6 indoor and outdoor venues throughout the town. Some of the venues have plenty of other amenities so you can truly get in the mood for the event. Sean Kelly was one of the finest cyclists that Europe has ever seen and it was in the beautiful County Waterford in the South East of Ireland that he learned that craft. In paying tribute to the name of Sean Kelly, County Waterford hold a yearly cycle tour of the hills and valleys where Kelly's bike once flashed over the cobbles. The 2009 event will take place on Sunday August 30th. More details to follow closer to the event date.

This four-day event is held each September where four-person teams play on 4 superb courses at: Mount Juliet (Co. Kilkenny), Waterford Castle, Faithlegg and Tramore. There are individual prizes of Waterford Crystal on each course each day as well as best overall teams prizes.

Tramore Surf & Sea Festival

The Tramore Surf & Sea Festival, run by Oceanics Surf School, is a ladies surf weekend and sea festival. The festival promisses to be an adventure packed weekend with surf lessons, pilates & indian head message workshop, kite surfing, eco walks, beach vollyball, a barbecue, and much more!
